tom ford private blend lipsticks

original

below is an excessively long story of my first tom ford lipstick purchased a years ago. skip to the end for the actual product review and swatches.

“oh my gawd, that looks sooooo good on you.”

i thought my valley girl accent was bad, but this dude’s got me beat.

“doesn’t it feel sooooo good?” the sales associate continued.

“yeah, it feels pretty nice.” i said quietly, trying to hide my excitement from him. the truth is i’ve been searching high and low for this tom ford lipstick in black orchid for a while. i knew the quality should be great, but it was beyond my expectation: Super rich and pigmented, yet not at all drying. i should also mention that i had exceeded my shopping budget for the month, and wasn’t planning to purchase today. however,  if i have one shopping kryptonite, it would be the stylish gays. i am both infatuated and intimidated by them. they can sell me fish hooks as earrings and i will probably end up getting extra piercings. it might be because all i watch is bravo tv and secretly wish to have a guy friend that i can call girlfriend.

“(lady’s name i can’t remember), come here! doesn’t this lipstick look so good on her?” he’s waved over his colleague to lay on the compliments even thicker. oh, he’s good.

“yes, it’s beautiful on you.” she agreed.

“here try this color.” he quickly cleaned up another tube of bright red lipstick and handed to me. my heart skipped a beat. “this is called cherry lush. it’s, like, our best seller. all of tom ford’s fans buy it. it has a hint of blue, so it’ll make your teeth look whiter.”

just like black orchid, cherry lush was equally gorgeous and luxurious. and he was right. it was like an instant visit to the dentist.

well, i’m certainly a tom ford’s fan. even though i can’t afford most of his products, and i was already way over in my spending for the month… but come on, it’s only a lipstick. what’s $20 or $30 for a tom ford creation? besides, i did’t want this guy to think i’m just wasting his time. he did already speak to me for more than 5 minutes.

“ok, i’ll buy this one.” i handed black orchid to him.

“great! let me get a new one for you.” for the few minutes he was gone to retrieve the lipstick for me, my mind started wondering off. i started planning all the different outfits i will pair with the lipstick, and all the events i have coming up to show off my new fashion forward pout.

“so you’re total today is $52.56.” he proclaimed.

WHAT? OVER 50 BUCKS FOR A LIPSTICK? sure, i’m superficial and irresponsible enough to have tapped into my savings for shoes and handbags from time to time, but when it comes to lipsticks, i’ve never went over $30. after all, they seem so disposable and temporary. i wanted to turn around and leave, but it was too late. the sales associate was staring at me with his perfectly curled and mascaraed eyes, waiting for my payment. damn those beautiful judgmental eyes! i quickly caved and handed him my credit card. lucky for him, besides superficial, i am also just insecure enough to care what a random stranger thinks of me.

as he was ringing me up, i was already plotting my next nordstrom trip to return this ridiculously expensive purchase… with a different sales associate. unfortunately, the next couple of times i was in the store to make the return, he was always diligently guarding the counter. it’s as if he knew all my moves before i made them. gosh, we should totally be bff’s.

eventually, a birthday party came up, and i decided to give the lipstick another shot. after all, with nordstrom’s lenient return policy, what do i have to lose?

turns out, what i ended up losing was over $50, and happily, many more times in the future. after one day of usage, i knew i must start collecting these lipsticks like iphone apps.

tom ford private blend lipsticks have one of the best formulas in the market. i’ve since tried other luxury brands’ lipsticks (i.e. chanel, dior, ysl, and etc.), and TF is still my favorite to date. as mention before, it is rich and pigmented, with just enough moisture to not dry out my lips, yet it stays put and doesn’t slip around too much. i hate it when i end up with lipstick on my chin and teeth. with TF lipsticks, i don’t even need to wear lip liners to contain them. the best part is the lasting power is around 6 hours, and that includes eating and drinking throughout the day. when it does start to wear off, it fades evenly, so i never get blotchy patches of color or a chola-like ring around my lips.

in the end, i didn’t end up with a gay best friend that likes to over pronounces his s’s, but at least i have these beautiful tom ford lippies that will keep me company until i find my very own brad goreski or cameron silver or dare to dream, tom ford.

sablesmoke3

sable smoke is my go to nude lipstick for the ultimate sex kitten look (or in this case, sexy mug shot). it is close to my natural shade (top left image), but with a warm caramel tone.

blackorchid

black orchid is the deep wine lipstick that adds plenty of drama, but doesn’t take me all the way into the gothic realm.

cherrylush

cherry lush is the classic bright red lipstick with a cool undertone that slightly whitens the teeth.

aphrodisiac

aphrodisiac is the bright fuchsia pink lipstick i reach for when i need a break from red lipsticks, but still want the glamour and pizazz.

Do you used lip brush? It looks perfect on you! I don’t see any feathery lines. I’ve been trying to find a nice red lipstick that last for a long time. I love Estee Lauder Fig color or NARS, but by the afternoon, it will fade off and I can see some white lines in the middle. Perhaps I need a lip liner? And I know how you feel. Every time I go to Sephora, I’ll spend $$ on a bunch of lipsticks especially when the sale associate is similar to the one that you described earlier.

I love the pink and the red colours, I’ve never tried Tom Ford before though.

LOL. I love how you went from “$50 for a lipstick?!” to buying a whole collection of them 😉

You look great in all the colors. Love! I can’t pull of the bright lips like you do, I do love the look though.

i love experimenting with lip colors. it doesn’t have to be designer, i think as long as you can find a color and texture that works for you, then it’s great!

Loved this story Yvonne! I don’t own any lippies because the few I’ve tried have dried my lips and made them peel. *sad face* I need to try TF for myself. My favorites on you are sable smoke and aphrodisiac.

And how did you know I’ve also secretly wished for a fabulous friend like Brad Goreski? 😉

aww i hate when lippies make me peel. make sure you use a good lip moisturizer before applying lipstick. my favorite is sugar by fresh.

Hey Yvonne, yeah, I didn’t realize that these lipsticks are over $40 but after reading your blog and your reviews, I might consider getting one. I really like the sable smoke.

You have such a gorgeous smile! I’ve never ventured in to designer lipsticks as I find that the drugstore ones do just well, but there are just certain colours that you will never be able to recreate.. Black Orchid being one of them! I just might have to break out the extra money for this little gem, especially after seeing in on you!

Black Orchid looks incredible on you!! I picked up a few of the TF lipsticks when they were in the white packaging, they are a pretty penny that’s for sure! I haven’t bought any new ones since. I do want Spanish Pink in the dark packaging though! It’s SO hard to pull the trigger unless it’s a Triple Points time!! lol

Reply
yvonne

i loooove the spanish pink! i’m deciding on that one or the indian rose for my next tf lipstick.
